Description
In Maui Hawaii are two imposing walls of coral stone blocks These ruins are all that remain of a fort that stood just south of the Lahaina courthouse. This fort overlooked one of the canals of Lahaina, now a paved street, and was built to protect the town after unruly sailors who fired a canon at Rev. Richards house. The missionaries saw the womanizing and drinking of the whaling sailors as a danger to Lahaina. Rev. Richard convinced the king to ban women from the ships and this sparked the incident. Later visitors to the island thought the fort looked like it was more for show than force. It was finally torn down in 1850 and supplied the stone for the Hale Paahao Prison. Maui county USA.

Always a favorite landmark in Lahaina. I knew an elderly woman by the name of Mary Helen Gay through the late 70s who's grandfather had been one of the helmet wearing guards for Kamehameha V. She lived in Kihei at the time, but her family owned a long stretch of land along Front Street towards the south part of town. She had a lot of stories to tell about the whaling and missionary days. She had married into the Gay-Robinson families, so you can only imagine the history associated with her. Her husband, Laurence Kainoahou Gay, owned Lanai at one point (I have a book he wrote about it that is fascinating), and can you imagine being related to the families on Ni'ihau? She had never been invited to visit that island. Always brings back the stories she used to tell me when I see historic images of Lahaina. L/F Featured in Hawaiiana.
